Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Monday ordered the United States and Arkansas flags be flown at half-staff to honor the memory of Tommy Robinson, a former congressman and Pulaski County sheriff.
Besides his time as sheriff and congressman, Robinson also made an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid during the 1990 election that ultimately saw Bill Clinton reelected as governor, and was often in the media spotlight.

"Robinson was popular and loved across Arkansas during his decades in public life," the order states. "It is fitting and right for Arkansas to honor him and his decades of service to her people."
Robinson was later appointed by then-Gov. Mike Huckabee to several roles from 1999 to 2005, including on the Arkansas Pollution Control and Ecology Commission, the State Parole Board and the Arkansas Rural Development Commission. He ran again for a congressional seat in 2002 but lost to conservative Democratic incumbent Marion Berry.
He switched to the Republican Party in his third term before running against and losing to Sheffield Nelson in the 1990 primary race for governor. Several longtime political figures in Arkansas, including Skip Rutherford, former dean of the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, as well as Arkansas Democrat-Gazette columnist John Brummett, have said Nelson's loss to Clinton paved the way for his successful presidential bid. Rutherford has said that, had Robinson won the primary, he likely would have gone on to defeat Clinton and would have "changed the course of Arkansas and American politics and history."
