Note: There is not currently a single page where City and County flags for USA locations are uploaded - such a page would quickly become unmanageable. Please upload such images to an appropriate state-level space page. See United States Project for a table of state-level project pages. The following table lists state-level pages that I'm aware of with images attached. ~ Noland-165, 29 September 2021

Its that way on the Descendants, US Civil War, The Great War, and WWII stickers which I'm familar that use the filename if you want to display a state flag. It seems that's the reason for the table in this State Flags data space, it gives you the filename for corresponding state. What am I missing?
Please don't change the image file names. We need to fix it so that people are referencing templates that are properly coded.

If this error just started appearing it's likely that the old Minnesota flag image was connected to several other pages besides this one, but the last instance of it was removed very recently.

I'm one of those affected by deletion of a Minnesota flag (Image:US State Flag Images-26.png) used in Migrating Ancestors. I want to emphasize two points made above, but first, background. The dates in question occurred in the mid-late 1880's. IMHO, it would look ridiculous to show a flag that was not adopted until almost 150 years later. My points: 1) Once WT has created a 'source' (e.g., flag image) it must NOT delete that source! Else all the havoc described above will occur; 2) I rely on WT documentation for how I use (or abuse) WT resources. If a badge, sticker, template says us ea file, don't expect me to use a something else instead - unless it, too, is documented. Then it's my choice without strong guidance from WT. Finally, a wish for the Minnesota sticker and its like. Let me provide a date or date range. Then have the sticker select the appropriate flag image. I can dream, can't I?

edited to fix visible coding (to make it visible) and to note that while the file name for the old Minnesota flag includes the name "Civil War Flags", it would not be appropriate for that time, since that flag, according to Wikipedia, was in use from 1957-1983. The file name is created when an image is uploaded, based on its format and the profile page to which it is uploaded, and someone had uploaded a copy of the current (at the time) Minnesota flag to Space:Civil_War_Flags.

A flag image should not be removed from a page (this page included) when that page is the only one listed under "In this image" on the image page. Removing the old flag from the table does not have the same result as removing the image from the page. Removing the file name/thumbnail image from the table does not lead to the deletion of the image. When the image is removed from its last remaining page (under "In this image" on the image page), even if the image is used in templates and tables across WikiTree, the image will become inaccessible and subsequently deleted automatically. Because templates and tables use only a thumbnail of the image, the image will continue to appear in stickers and tables until the image itself is automatically removed.
My suggestion is NOT to delete any of the existing state flag images, but rather just change the description to something like "Minnesota (1983-2024)" and then upload the new image with description "Minnesota (2024-)".
The template "US Flag|Minnesota" (put curly brackets around that string when using it) works in the Migrating Ancestors template. (I checked.) All other states also *should* work that way, but I haven't verified that yet.
I believe that there is a warning to this effect when one removes the last "In this image" page, but I don't want to test that belief, as there is not an image that I want deleted from WikiTree at this time.

In the 18 months I've been Data Doctoring the 971 Missing Image errors, I've help beat the number of those errors down somewhat, but when someone then deletes a very small file that cause 280+ new errors its discouraging. Yes, I could edit and change 280 profiles, but I think the better solution is to keep the historical versions of the state flags attached to this data space. Maybe it would be better with two tables of "Current State Flag Images" and another "Historical State Flag images", but lets please just don't delete them!
The problem was that the uploaded image of the old Minnesota flag had not been added to any other profile (space or person). It only appeared in the Images of this page (under the Images tab - use in a template or table doesn't count), so when it was removed from this page, that made it private (viewable only to the person who uploaded it) and slated it for automatic deletion, which subsequently occurred (creating the database errors you encountered).

Flag images can be used on a profile (space or person) by using the file name. They can also be used in a template by using the file name. Or, to use the current flag within another template, you can use an internal template for flag images - see for example Template: US Flag and Template: UK Flag.
I am going to attempt to restore the old Minnesota flag image with the name of US_State_Flag_Images-26.png and label it "Minnesota (1983-2024)" so Data Doctors don't have edit 280 profiles.
So long as the rest of us managing those 280+ profiles don't have to individually update them for a new table name. Anything that breaks the existing link/reference will cause someone some work. Won't it be easier to give new image a new name. For those who want current image, then, "current_Minnesota_flag" or similar.
I believe that several other states are considering changes to their flags and seals, so this could become a widespread issue.
Regardless of what happened here, a template should be able to call another template (as Liz described), rather than an image file. Then a template like Migrating Ancestor could call a named template that would display the flag, and when the flag changed, only the named template would need to be updated.
If I were adding the Migrating Ancestor sticker to a profile for someone who migrated to Minnesota in 1980, I would use the older Minnesota flag , not the current flag.
