This was the flag of the Constitutional Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, with the Bourbon coat of arms that was created by King Ferdinand II also in 1848.
The ornamental pattern down the left-hand side of the flag is called “koshkar muiz” which means “the horns of the ram”, and represents the art and cultural traditions of the Kazakh people. This pattern is all over Kazakhstan, used in construction and interior design, it’s used in menus and on clothing, and really is just all over the place. If you go to Kazakhstan and keep your eyes open you’ll definitely see this design.
The Italian flag, il Tricolore, has been in use in its current form since the formation of the Republic in 1946. It was formally adopted a little while later, in 1948. It is made up of three equal bands: green, white and red, with the green band on the hoist side. The first version of the flag was created in 1797 by the Cispadane Republic, following Napoleon's successful campaign in Italy, and inspired by the French flag, created in 1790.
The present 'Tricolore' was adopted officially on January 1st 1948, following the formation of the Italian Republic and the end of the reign of the House of Savoy.
The colour scheme was inherited from the flag of the Kazakh SSR, which had the standard gold hammer and sickle alongside the star of the Communist Party, all in the top left hand corner of a red field. Although all the flags of the Soviet Republics are very similar, and it’s quite a task to memorise them all and remember which one belongs to whom, like with the modern flag, the colours of the Kazakh SSR’s flag do stand out. The rest of the flag is very standard, but the band across the bottom third of the flag is in that iconic and unique sky blue.

In 1861, the flag of Sardinia was adopted as the official flag of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy. The flag incorporates the armorial bearings of the Royal House of Savoy, the family who ruled Italy until it voted to become a republic in 1948.
Between 1917 and 1953 when this flag was adopted, there were several other variations on the flag incorporating Kazakh SSR written in Kazakh and Russian, and in both Latin letters (Kazakh) and Cyrillic letters. It’s possible though that the sky blue colour scheme that makes the Soviet and the modern flags stand out so much was actually taken from the flag of the Kazakh Khanate.
In 1805, Napoleon crowned himself French Emperor and the Italian Republic became the first Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy (Italico) under his direct rule. A revised version of the flag, featuring the Napoleonic Eagle was adopted and used until his abdication in 1814.

In 1798, the Cispadane Republic and the Transpadane Republic merged into the Cisalpine Republic. They adopted the 'Tricolore' with vertical bands, and without the emblem as their flag. This version of the flag was used up until 1802.
In 1802, the Cisalpine Republic was renamed as the Napoleonic Italian Republic. A new flag was adopted using the same colours but with a red field and a green square set within a white lozenge.

The flag of the Cispadane Republic was a horizontal square with the red band at the top and an emblem in the centre of the white band. This emblem was made up of a garland of laurel decorated with a trophy of arms and four arrows, which represented the four provinces that formed the Republic.
This original flag was based on the red and white of the flag of Milan, together with the green of the uniforms worn by the Milanese civic guards. Since then however, other interpretations of these colours have emerged. The green representing the countryside, the white representing the mountains, and the red representing the blood spilt during the unification of Italy. Another, more religious, interpretation claims that the green represents hope, the white represents faith and the red represents charity.
The Kazakh Khanate existed between the 15 th and the 19 th centuries and was located roughly where modern-day Kazakhstan now is. We can’t be sure of exactly what their flag was, and it’s very likely that they didn’t just have one unifying flag in the way that countries do now, but the flag that is generally assumed to have been theirs is a field of our favourite sky blue, topped with a white design.

The steppe eagle which makes up part of the central design is a symbol that has appeared on tribal flags for centuries and represents freedom and power. The sun which rests atop the eagle, has 32 rays that are in the shape of grains of wheat, which ironically (given the huge expanse of Kazakhstan that is completely barren desert) is supposed to represent the prosperity of the land.

In 1860, the flag of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was modified to include the House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies coat of arms. This flag was used until 1861 when the Kingdon of the Two Sicilies was defeated by Garribaldi in the famous Expedition of the Thousand.
During the Risorgimento, the period leading to Italian unification, there were many variations on the 'Tricolore' that appeared in various parts of the country. This was the flag adopted by the Grand Duchy of Tuscany when it was formed in 1848.
A very distinctive flag with its yellow (or gold) design on a sky blue background, this visually is one of my favourite flags. That blue is so distinctive and so unique in the world of flags. Incidentally it’s also the same blue used for their passports, so it’s dead easy to spot a Kazakh passport a mile away – amidst all the navy and maroon passports, the sky blue really stands out.
