The base was very unprotected, so the American ambush was a success and took no American lives. The group had two leaders during the attack: William Ide and Ezekiel Merritt. After the success in Sonoma, they declared California to be an independent republic. Their flag consisted of a bear looking towards a star. The flag also had the name of the republic (California Republic) on it. This is why the revolt is now called the Bear Flag Revolt.
