Last year 86 people were arrested during the celebrations downtown, creating calls from some City Council members for a dedicated celebration for the holiday weekend.
About 11:30 p.m. Friday, after some large fireworks were set off near East Monroe Street, police began blocking off the northbound lanes of Michigan Avenue and diverting traffic into the southbound lanes and then west toward the Kennedy Expressway.
About 8 p.m. Saturday, the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communication announced intermittent street closures to “alleviate traffic congestion” in the Loop.
The line of cars, trucks and other vehicles — some with the Mexican flag decorating their hoods and others with people hanging out the windows — stretched from just south of East Jackson Boulevard up to East Wacker Drive on Friday night, many sounding their horns in celebration.
During the Civil War, Texas joined many of its southern neighbors in seceding from the Union and forming the Confederate States of America. The Confederacy went through three different flag designs in its short life, the first of which is referred to as “The Stars and Bars” design. That design featured three alternating red and white horizontal stripes with a ring of white stars inside a blue rectangle in the upper left corner. This design was deemed too similar to the United States flag, and thus changed.
Following a victory over Mexico in 1836, Texas finally became its own republic. The design process for a new flag was a lengthy one, and while the first Texas flag featured only one star, it’s not the lone star we’ve come to know and love.
The simplified version of the royal banner of France was lifted by French nobleman René-Robert Cavalier, who was attempting to establish a colony on the Texas coast. There was no “official” flag of France at the time of Cavalier’s exploration, and while the white flag sprinkled with gold fleurs-de-lis has been adopted by many as the most likely design, several variations of that design are used in displays of the six flags to this day.

The two flags that followed were similar in design, both featuring the Confederate battle flag in their layout. The battle flag of the Confederacy originated from the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, which was a red square with a blue X bordered with white and embellished with white stars. The last two flags of the Confederacy were white with the battle flag in the upper left corner. The second flag was called “The Stainless Banner,” and the third, which added a vertical red stripe, was called “The Bloodstained Banner.”

This weekend’s festivities for Mexican Independence Day, which is Monday, will be the first time in more than a decade that a sanctioned celebration will take place in the Loop. City officials hoped the event would help curb car caravans and deter unsanctioned demonstrations.
“Six flags over Texas” is more than just the name of a theme park. Throughout history, many flags have flown over our great state, including a version of the hotly debated Confederate flag. (However, you’re not likely to find Confederate vanity plates in Texas after a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling.) Learn a bit about the banners that have represented Texas:

Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, and the region of Texas became Mexican territory. The flag depicts an ancient legend in which the Aztecs were told by their gods to build a city where they could find an eagle on a cactus eating a serpent. The period during which Mexico’s flag flew over Texas was one of great population growth for the area. It also spurred the series of historic battles that would eventually lead to the fourth and most familiar flag over Texas.
