This is what the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic changed its flag to in 1918. The white crescent moon and the 8-pointed star remained, but the background was changed into a blue-red-green horizontal tricolor. The same red used on the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic’s old flag was used for the center stripe of the tricolor.

Shortly after the chaos that ensued in 1918, the Azerbaijan Socialist Soviet Republic gained control of the country and maintained it for a long time. Throughout the roughly 71-year period in which the AzSSR ruled the region, they changed their flag a multitude of times. The flag shown above was their first design, which was only used during the year of 1920. In traditional Soviet style, it featured a red background. In the upper left quadrant of the flag, there is a white crescent moon and a 5-pointed star.
The Centro-Caspian Dictatorship was an anti-Soviet group that controlled the Azerbaijani city of Baku for less than 2 months before the city was captured by the Ottomans and Azerbaijanis. Their flag was a blue-red-blue horizontal tricolor.
Once again, the AzSSR changed the design in the northwestern quadrant of its flag. This change brought along a green rectangle with a yellow border. Within the green field is the acronym ASSR written in yellow Cyrillic text.
Another khanate that existed in modern-day Azerbaijan was the Nakhichevan Khanate. Its flag was far different from other khanate flags. In typical Azerbaijani fashion, the flag has a 2:1 aspect ratio. The design features two horizontal stripes, the top stripe in green and the bottom stripe in red. Centered near the bottom of the green stripe is a red 8-pointed star.
In March of 1922, the AzSSR united with the SSR of Georgia and Armenia under the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic (TSFSR). The flag shown above is the flag of the AzSSR under the TSFSR. The TSFSR had its own flag that was separate from this flag. This particular flag features the same red background with a yellow crescent moon and a hollow 5-pointed star above a yellow hammer and sickle. To the right of these figures is the acronym AI3C above the acronym ASSR written in yellow Cyrillic text.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, a number of khanates existed in modern-day Azerbaijan. The flag shown above is the banner of the Shaki Khanate. It’s a very unique design, shaped like a house on its side. It features a thick gold border textured with gold ovals. Within this border is a bright orange field covered in more gold ovals, diamonds, and hollow 8-pointed stars.
As previously mentioned, the TSFSR had its own flag that was separate from the flags of the territories they controlled. This is the flag of the TSFSR in its entirety. It features the same red background with a hollow yellow 5-pointed star. Inside the star is a yellow hammer and sickle, and wrapped around part of the star is the acronym ЗСФСР.
The AzSSR slightly changed its flag in 1927. The flag is almost exactly the same; the difference is that the acronym at the top was changed from AI3C to AS3C.

This was the last and longest-lasting flag of the AzSSR. There were three distinct changes to the previous flag. First, the acronym below the hammer and sickle was removed. Second, a hollow yellow 5-pointed star was added above the hammer and sickle. Third and most obviously, a horizontal blue stripe was added to the bottom of the flag. The second flag shown above is the backside of the first flag shown above. It’s significant because most Soviet flags only had the hammer and sickle on one side.

The Republic of Azerbaijan has one of the most colorful and visually pleasing flags in the world. Its flag also has an uncommon aspect ratio of 2:1. But the Azerbaijani flag hasn’t always looked like this: let’s go back in time to examine how this flag has changed throughout history.
1918 was a chaotic time in Azerbaijan and the surrounding areas. Many different groups rose to power and fell within the span of just a few months. The flag shown above is the flag of the Baku Commune, a group of 26 Commissars who were arrested and suspiciously executed by the British. They could’ve been handed over to British forces in exchange for British citizens held by the Soviets, but Captain Reginald Teague-Jones of the British pulled out of the deal that likely would’ve worked and obeyed orders to execute them. Reportedly, he could’ve stopped the executions if he wanted to. The flag of the executed Commissars features a red background beneath yellow Russian text.

Nearly 1,000 years ago, the Eldiguzids ruled modern-day Azerbaijan. At the peak of their dynasty, they ruled much of the Middle East. The flag shown above is an artistic recreation of what their flag really looked like back in the day. It features a semi-dark blue background and a white two-headed eagle in the center. Two-headed eagles have been common in European and Middle Eastern flags for centuries.
The AzSSR slightly changed its flag in 1940. The acronym displayed on the flag was changed from AzSSR to A3CCP. They mean the same thing; A3CCP is AzSSR written in Cyrillic.
Once again in 1931, the AzSSR changed the acronyms in its flag under the TSFSR. This time, the acronym written in Cyrillic was removed altogether. The acronym that was at the top was brought down slightly. It was also changed from AS3C to ASŞC.

The AzSSR quickly changed their flag, only changing one aspect: the crescent moon and the star were reversed so that they faced right as opposed to left. This design didn’t last long either.
The TSFSR split back into the AzSSR, Georgian SSR, and Armenian SSR in 1936. This is the flag that the AzSSR went with after this split occurred. It still features the red background and the yellow hammer and sickle, but the acronym was removed along with the crescent moon and star. Below the hammer and sickle is the acronym AzSSR written in yellow.
This was the flag of the Nakhichevan ASSR, an autonomous republic within the AzSSR. Its flag was nearly the same as that of the AzSSR. The only difference is that its name is written in both Armenian and Azerbaijani below the acronym AzSSR.
The Nakhichevan ASSR used this flag as its last. Once again, it’s the same as the AzSSR’s flag except that the autonomous republic’s name is written in Azerbaijani below the hammer and sickle.
The next dynasty to rule modern-day Azerbaijan was the Mihranids. Their flag is vastly different from that of the Eldiguzids. It features a red background with two identical lions facing each other on either have of the flag. Centered below the lions is a black goat that appears to be jumping. The exact time of the existence of this flag is unknown.

Once the Republic of Azerbaijan came into power in the country, the flag was quickly changed to a design very similar to the flag used by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in the late 1910s. It features a blue-red-green horizontal tricolor with a white crescent moon and an 8-pointed star in the center.
The only difference between this flag and its predecessor is a slight variation in color. The blue and red stripes were made slightly lighter and the green stripe was made slightly darker. These colors are packed with symbolism: the blue represents Azerbaijan’s Turkic heritage, the red represents democracy and the creation of a modern state, and the green represents the Islamic faith. The crescent moon and star are usually seen as Islamic symbols.

When Azerbaijan claimed independence from the TDFR, it became the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. This was the only Azerbaijani group that formed in 1918 to last longer than a year. They only used this flag for a few months before changing it. This version features a red background with a white crescent moon and an 8-pointed star in the center.
This is the flag of the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic, which ruled much of modern-day Azerbaijan and the surrounding countries. The republic barely lasted a month because the countries it controlled claimed independence shortly after it rose to power. The flag of the TDFR is a horizontal tricolor with yellow, black, and red stripes from top to bottom.
