When she joined the 49ers as a coach in 2017, Sowers explained why she felt the need to discuss her sexuality publicly. “No matter what you do in life, one of the most important things is to be true to who you are,” she told Outsports at the time. “There are so many people who identify as LGBT in the NFL, as in any business, that do not feel comfortable being public about their sexual orientation.”

Sowers will be the first openly LGBTQ+ coach — male, female, or nonbinary — to appear at the Super Bowl. She will also be the first female coach to be present at the annual NFL event.

The 33-year-old Kansas-born coach became the second female NFL coach ever when she joined the team in 2017 as a season offensive assistant. At that time, she also came out as lesbian, becoming the first LGBTQ+ coach in the league’s history, as well as in American male pro team sports at large.

However, she’s insisted that she doesn’t let her identity define her career. “When you ask any of the coaches who work with me, often they’ll get asked about working with a female,” she told People in November. “To them, it’s not even something that they think about — and it’s not something that I truly think about. They see me for who I am as a coach, and not a female coach.”
