The origins of the modern-day flag of Maryland can be traced back to the late 19th century. It was originally displayed during a Baltimore parade in 1880. The parade marked the 150th anniversary of the city’s founding. Several years later, it was displayed at the Gettysburg Battlefield. Several ceremonies were held at the Gettysburg Battlefield. Records show that the flag of Maryland was displayed at these ceremonies.

The flag of Maryland is the only official state flag in the United States to feature English heraldry. There are plenty of other unique flags, but only Maryland’s flag has English heraldry.

Cool as it may sound, the one who wrote the national anthem was born in Maryland. Many also feel that the Maryland Flag is the perfect flag because of its interesting patterns and bold colors. The Maryland State Flag design comes from the shield in the coat of arms of the Calvert family.

The state flag of Maryland was officially adopted March 9, 1904. The flag was first flown October 11, 1880, in Baltimore at a parade marking the 150th anniversary of the founding of Baltimore. It was flown a 2nd time on October 25, 1888 at Gettysburg Battlefield for ceremonies dedicating monuments to Maryland regiments of the Army of the Potomac. The flag’s design is taken from the heraldic Maryland Coat of Arms from the Calvert (founders of Maryland) and Crossland families. Therefore, the original designers were the family of George Calvert and the English College of Arms.

Also known as the Old Line State, Maryland lies at the center of the Eastern Seaboard that stretches from Maine to Virginia. Its location played a great role during the Civil War where one of the most significant battles known as “Battle of Antietam” took place on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland. Though a number of brave combatants lost their lives, the “Battle of Antietam” was a strategic victory that ended General Robert E. Lee’s Invasion of the North.

The Maryland state flag is divided into four quarters. The first and fourth quarters consist of six vertical bars alternately yellow (which represents gold) and black with a diagonal band on which the colors are reversed. The yellow and black quarters represent the family arms of the founder of Maryland, George Calvert, first Lord Baltimore. The second and third quarters consist of a quartered field of red and white (which represents silver) bearing a Greek cross with arms ending in trefoils. The colors alternate with red on the white ground and white on the red. The second and third quarters display the arms of Lord Baltimore’s material family the Crosslands. Since the Maryland flag is a heraldic flag, it bears mentioning what colors symbolize in heraldry: the color red is a symbol of hardiness, bravery, strength and valor, white represents peace and honesty, and the color yellow or gold is a symbol of the sun, generosity and wealth.

While the flag of Maryland was displayed as early as 1880, it wasn’t officially adopted until the turn of the 20th century. In 1904, Maryland lawmakers passed legislation adopting the flag.
