The area was called Cayo Hueso when the Spanish controlled Florida in precolonial times. If you think Cayo Hueso means “Key West” in Spanish because it sounds like it, you’d be clever, but wrong. It means “bone cay,” a reference to the multitude of communal graveyards found with scattered bones of the region’s original inhabitants.

The contest is open for a limited time, and the winning flag will be officially proposed for Mars' settlements and future outposts. The chosen flag will be flown on Mars, symbolizing a new chapter for humanity—one that connects Earth and Mars in a shared legacy of exploration and discovery.
Fast forward through the 1800s, the Civil War, the 1900s, several devastating hurricanes and we find ourselves in the 1980s at the time of the Mariel Boatlift, which deposited 125,000 Cubans on Florida’s doorstep. The U.S. Border Patrol announced a blockade on U.S. 1, the main highway into the Florida Keys, with the stated intention of curbing illegal immigration and drugs into the country.
While the technology to get to Mars is rapidly advancing, the cultural and symbolic steps are just as crucial for the long-term success of human settlements. A flag for Mars would become part of a broader vision for the planet—reflecting the values and ambitions of those who inhabit it.
Over the years since the rebellion, some mostly comedic skirmishes have sprung up between local and federal authorities – usually involving the tossing of water balloons, conch fritters, and loaves of Cuban bread. And to this day, April 23 remains “Independence Day” for Conchs.

The unintended consequence: An epic traffic jam aggravated tourists and residents alike. Key West’s elected officials protested to the federal government and sought judicial injunctions against the blockade, but to no avail.
Don’t let your eyes glaze over just yet. We’re getting to the fun part. Well, if history is fun to you. Trust us: There are good reasons folks like Ernest Hemingway, Judy Blume, Jimmy Buffett, Tennessee Williams, Kelly McGillis and even Harry S. Truman spent so much time here.
Colors: Red, white, and black. Design: A simple red field with a white circle in the center, representing Mars, and a thin black ring around it, symbolizing Mars' thin atmosphere. Symbolism: Simplicity reflects Mars as a new, yet harsh, frontier. The white circle represents Mars' role as a new home, and the black ring reminds us of the challenges of its atmosphere.

In the end, a flag for Mars is not just about staking a claim or symbolizing a new territory—it’s about connection. It’s about uniting those on Earth with the efforts of those on Mars, and creating a symbol that transcends individual nations, cultures, and languages. In time, as Mars becomes a world of its own, this flag will remind us all of the shared journey we undertook to make the impossible a reality.
From a strict geographical or cartographical point of view, Key West is actually more than a single island. Within its city limits are also the surrounding islands of Dredgers Key, Fleming Key, Sunset Key and a portion of Stock Island.

As humans step foot on Mars for the first time, plant crops, build habitats, and eventually establish Martian cities, a flag will provide continuity. It will connect the first pioneers to future generations, and ultimately, represent humanity’s first successful expansion beyond its home world.
As the years progress, this symbolic connection could grow into something deeper—a flag that flies on both Mars and Earth, symbolizing the bond between two worlds. For future Martians, it would stand as a reminder of their heritage and shared human history, even as they pioneer a new future.
Colors: Red, white, and gray. Design: A large red circle for Mars in the center, with two smaller white or gray circles (Phobos and Deimos, Mars’ moons) in the top corners. Symbolism: The design focuses on Mars and its moons, symbolizing exploration of not just Mars but its entire system.

When visiting Key West, be sure to stand proud when you see the beloved blue flag featuring the Conch Republic logo. And just keep your eyes open for flying bread.
Floridians and visitors alike have long adored Key West for its quirky nature and laid-back vibes. But why, some ask, is this city sometimes referred to as the Conch Republic? Is that a nickname? Was this island formerly its own nation?
Colors: Red, gold, and dark blue. Design: A red background with a golden, curved path running through the center, symbolizing the journey to Mars, and a blue circle in one corner, representing Earth. Symbolism: The gold path stands for the journey of discovery and science, while the blue Earth represents humanity's starting point and the unity required to explore beyond.

Why “conch” though? Prepare yourself for a shorter history lesson. After America’s Revolution, residents still loyal to the Crown fled to the nearest British colony – the Bahamas. Once the British Parliament began taxing the Bahamians for their food, the people decided they’d rather eat conch than pay taxes. As those fiery, gastro-savvy rebels began to immigrate to Florida in search of better-paying jobs, the nickname of “Conchs” stuck with them. (It didn’t hurt that these freshly minted Floridians often retained their British “Cockney” accents, further strengthening the moniker.)

A Martian flag would be an essential part of forming a planetary identity. It can represent the values that early Martian pioneers might embody: exploration, adaptability, innovation, and perseverance. Moreover, it would stand for the future of human civilization—not as citizens of one planet but as members of a multi-planetary species.
So, on April 23, 1982, Key West Mayor Dennis Wardlow decided that since the federal government was treating the islands as a foreign nation, why not make it official? Wardlow declared Key West was independent and would be known by the name – you got it – the Conch Republic.
Okay, so granted that nugget of news didn’t answer your question. We just wanted you to have some perspective on the island’s name.

Creating a flag for Mars also signals the beginning of a new era, one in which Mars is more than just another celestial body, but a place with its own identity, culture, and community. While it may seem far off, Mars will one day be home to people born on the planet. For them, Mars will not be a distant dream or a place of curiosity but their actual home world. Just as each nation on Earth proudly waves its flag to symbolize its history and identity, future Martians will need their own symbol, one that ties them to their planetary home and expresses their unique place in the universe.

Colors: Red, white, and green. Design: A hexagonal pattern in the center, with a red background. The hexagon is divided into green, white, and red sections. Symbolism: The hexagon could represent colony modules or domes used in Mars settlements. Green could symbolize new life, white for peace, and red for the Martian landscape.
As various space agencies and private companies race to explore and colonize Mars, the efforts are driven by a mix of countries, cultures, and perspectives. While the mission to Mars may have begun with individual nations like the United States and Russia in the space race, it has evolved into a global collaboration involving nations from every continent.

A flag for Mars would offer a unifying symbol for these disparate groups. It would serve as a reminder that, though humanity may be separated by borders, ideologies, and languages on Earth, on Mars, we are united by a singular purpose—exploration, survival, and the drive to build a future beyond Earth. A Mars flag could fly at future settlements and scientific outposts, reminding everyone of the cooperative spirit that made this achievement possible.
This flag would stand for more than just Mars itself. It would represent humanity’s collective ambition, creativity, and resilience in the face of the greatest challenges known to science and technology. By giving Mars its own flag, we establish a symbol of our reach beyond Earth—a way to connect our planetary past with our interplanetary future.
As humanity stands on the threshold of becoming a multi-planetary species, Mars—the red planet—has emerged as the next great frontier. The exploration and potential colonization of Mars represent not just a scientific and technological milestone but a moment of profound cultural and symbolic importance. One powerful way to solidify this new chapter in our species’ history is through the creation of a flag for Mars, a symbol that will connect Earth’s inhabitants with this new world in the cosmos.
While the flag would establish Mars as a new world, it would also remain deeply connected to Earth. Many proposed flag designs for Mars reflect the relationship between these two worlds. Red, symbolizing the Martian soil, paired with blue or white to represent Earth and humanity, are recurring themes. These visual connections underscore the reality that Mars is not isolated from its origins—Earth is the cradle from which this new planetary endeavor was born.

Fast forward back to 1982 and now-Prime Minister Dennis Wardlow’s new fiefdom. His revolution would last 60 seconds before he “surrendered” to a Navy officer and applied for $1 billion in foreign aid. (Keep watching the mail for that check, Mr. Prime Minister.)

Throughout human history, flags have served as potent symbols of unity, identity, and shared purpose. From national flags to banners representing causes and movements, these designs capture the hopes, values, and aspirations of the people who rally behind them. A flag is much more than a piece of cloth; it is a declaration of identity. For Mars, creating a flag is essential to establishing its own identity as humanity's first extra-planetary settlement.
