NC flag

The 28th North Carolina infantry regiment was organized at High Point, NC, on September 21, 1861, and numbered about 900 men divided into 10 companies with Lieutenant Colonel James H. Lane as its commanding officer. The men were from the counties of Surry, Gaston, Catawba, Stanley, Montgomery, Yadkin, Orange, and Cleveland. The regiment was engaged in heavy combat for most of the war. The 28th NC fought in the battles of Chancellorsville, Cold Harbor, Gettysburg, Manassas, Petersburg, Seven Days’ Battles, Fredericksburg, and many others. The men fought gallantly and bravely and suffered heavy casualties throughout the four years of fighting. Several battle honors appear on the flag as was the custom during the civil war. The flag was captured during Pickett’s Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3rd, 1863. It was one of 33 Confederate flags taken that day. The 28th Regiment lost 104 men out of 349 men engaged. When what was left of the glorious North Carolina Regiment surrendered at Appomattox, the starving remnants consisted of 17 officers and 213 enlisted men.
