Until June 22, 1906, the blue background of the Swedish flag was much darker than the version known today. After the dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway, the specific colors that should be used in the flag were codified in Sweden’s flag law.

The design of Sweden’s flag is based on the flag of Denmark, which also uses a horizontal cross on a solid-colored background. The colors used are likely based on Sweden's national coat of arms from 1442. Blue and yellow as national colors can be traced back to the 12th century, when, according to legend, King Eric IX saw a gold cross in the sky.
