It is a country located in the heart of Central Africa in the Congo River basin territory that was once called Zaire under Joseph Mobutu. After Algeria, it is the second largest country in Africa in terms of space. Its nine neighbouring countries are Southern Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Angola, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, Burundi, Zambia and Tanzania. This country has a great diversity of landscapes: it has one of the largest equatorial forests in the world, but also Great Lakes, volcanoes, savannas and a great mining wealth. This African country is a former Belgian colony that obtained its independence on 30th June 1960.
The three-coloured flag has the following meaning: the light blue colour evokes peace, the red band represents the blood spilled by the martyrs of Independence, the yellow corresponds to the country's enormous natural resources (45 million hectares of forest of great biodiversity, mining resources such as gold, silver, zinc, copper, cobalt, diamond, oil and hydroelectric wealth among others). The yellow star is a sign of hope for the country: a brighter future and a country that remains unified!

The DRC Congo adopted its current flag quite recently on 18 February 2006 when the new Congolese constitution was being drafted. It is a sky blue flag decorated with a yellow star and crossed diagonally from the bottom left corner to the top right corner by a red band bordered by a yellow border. With the exception of the lighter blue background, which was previously a deep dark blue, it resembles the old flags used between 1963 and 1971 when the Republic of Congo Kinshasa followed the Republic of Congo-Léopoldville just after the proclamation of Belgium's independence.
