Flags have been lowered to half-mast in memory of City of Langford’s Assistant Fire Chief, Lance Caven. Caven dedicated his life to preventing fires and saving lives, and will be remembered for his love and passion for firefighting and fire prevention. The flags will be lowered until sunset on the day of the funeral or memorial service.

The District’s flags have been lowered in honor of Chief John Cassidy from Colwood Fire Department. Chief Cassidy passed suddenly Wednesday evening, having dedicated 22 years of service in Colwood – including the last 6 years as Fire Chief. Chief Cassidy’s contributions to the health and safety of the community are unmeasurable. Flags at first responder detachments and city hall’s in the Capital Region are at half-mast in Cassidy’s honour. Plans for a memorial service will be released at a later date. The family and department have asked for time to be able to process the sudden loss and time to grieve Chief Cassidy.

To honour firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty, District flags are flown at half-mast on Firefighters’ National Memorial Day, which is recognized across Canada on the second Sunday in September.

To honour the memory of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, campus flags will be flown at half-mast from sunrise on April 9 until sunset on April 17, the day of the funeral and memorial service.

District flags are at hast-mast to respect and honour the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, the T-Sou-ke and all first peoples, who are dealing with the incomprehensible discovery of the remains of 215 children on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. The flags will remain at half-mast from May 31, 2021 to June 8, 2021, for a total of 215 hours, one hour for each of the children who died.

The District of Sooke has lowered the flags to half-mast to honour the 25-year-old Ontario wildland firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty, while on the front lines of a BC fire.

The flags at the municipal hall will be flown at half-mast from now until sunset on the day of the funeral (date to be determined) to mark the death of former Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Martin Brian Mulroney, P.C., C.C., G.O.Q.

From sunrise to sunset on Sunday, September 29, 2024, flags are lowered in recognition of Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day.

Flags at Municipal Hall are lowered to half-mast on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, recognizing the global impact of the events of September 11, 2001, lives lost and families affected.

In honour of Norm McInnis, former District of Sooke Chief Administrative Officer, who fought a courageous batter with cancer until his passing on July 30, 2024, flags will be flown at half-mast at Sooke Municipal Hall until B.C. Day.

In respect of our local government colleague in Oak Bay, Steve Seekins, who lost their life on the job this week, the District of Sooke has lowered the flags to half-mast.

In remembrance of the passing of Forrest Owen, of the Central Saanich Fire Department, the District of Sooke will lower its flags to half-mast.

Honouring her service and sacrifice, the District of Sooke has lowered the flags to half-mast for Devyn Gale, a BC Wildfire Service member who lost her life in the line of duty.

The Sooke Fire Department has been in contact with Acting Chief Gregg Chow to pass on our condolences and to provide any support that we can to help them through this period.

Flags have been lowered to half-mast in memory of Constable Shaelyn Yang, the fallen Burnaby RCMP Officer, who died while on duty on October 18, 2022. The flags will be lowered until sunset on the day of the funeral or memorial service.

The District of Sooke flags are lowered to half mast, honouring a retired member of Sooke Fire Rescue Services, Fred Parker. Fred dedicated more than 45 years serving communities, including more than ten in Sooke. The flags will remain lowered until Sunday, June 16, 2024.
