The national flag of Algeria consists of two equal vertical bars which are of green and white colours, with a red star and crescent in the center.  It is one of the symbols of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, located in North Africa in the Maghreb and the second largest country in Africa after Sudan.  Adopted on 3rd July 1962, a similar version of the flag was used by the Algerian government in exile as from 1958 to 1962.

The Algerian flag draws its symbolism from Islam with the red crescent symbolising the crescent moon that marks the end of Ramadan and which surrounds a 5-pointed star which is an Islamic symbol of the five pillars of Islam. The green colour represents the colour of Islam and the white colour is for purity. First used by the National Liberation Front (FLN) and the provisional government of the Algerian Republic during the Algerian war, the Algerian flag of size 2:3 was adopted in 1962, the year of the proclamation of the independence of Algeria which was liberated from colonialism. Today, this flag is used in Algeria as a national, commercial and state flags.
