Also, lying on the white shape, are four larger blue stars; one which is above the state name pointing upward, and the other three are below the state name, two pointing upward and one pointing downward. The red, white, and blue signify that Arkansas is one of the United States. The large white diamond signifies Arkansas is the only diamond producing state in the United States. The 25 white stars on the blue border represent Arkansas as the twenty-fifth state to be admitted to the Union. The two parallel white stars at the left and right points of the diamond represent the dual admission of Arkansas and Michigan to the Union since they were both admitted about the same time. Arkansas was admitted June of 1836 and Michigan in January 1837. The blue star above the state’s name represents the Confederacy. The three stars below the name have three meanings: Arkansas belonged to three countries (France, Spain and the United States) before admittance to the Union; the year of the Louisiana Purchase (when the land, now Arkansas, was gained by the United States) in 1803 which is the third year in the nineteenth century; and that Arkansas was the third state ( Louisiana, Missouri and Arkansas) created from the Louisiana Purchase by the United States.
