According to Evers' order, the American flag and the Wisconsin state flag will fly at half-staff at all buildings, grounds and military installations belonging to the state of Wisconsin.

U.S. flags typically fly at half-staff in the wake of national tragedies or after deaths of government officials, military members or first responders. They also fly at half-staff on Memorial Day and other national days of remembrance, including 9/11.

During his time in the war, Bode served on a combat bomb squadron. In September 1944, his aircraft was shot down while on a bombing mission over Germany.

“Staff Sergeant Bode selflessly gave his life fighting for the freedoms of his fellow Americans and our allies abroad,” Evers said in an news release. “It is an honor to be able to help welcome him back to Wisconsin after 80 years, where he can finally be laid to rest in his hometown of Racine.”

Wisconsin flags have been lowered Friday, Sept. 27 in honor of U.S. Army Air Force Staff Sgt. Ralph H. Bode, a Racine native who died in World War II.
