The Ethiopian flag consists of three horizontal stripes in green, yellow and red and a coat of arms in the centre. It is one of the symbols of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, a country considered the cradle of human civilization since the discovery of Lucy, a fossil dating back more than 3.2 million years. Ethiopia, considered the roof of Africa (because of its high plateaus), formerly known as the Abyssinian Empire, is one of the 51 founding member states of the UN.

Once the winning flag was chosen, the design was unveiled during the River Falls Days Parade with a special ceremony at City Hall following the parade. Artist Ben Branum is a local resident of River Falls. In addition to winning the River Falls Flag Challenge, he also received a $200 cash prize from the River Falls Community Arts Base, which helped sponsor the Challenge.

Since 1897, the flag of Ethiopia has been flying the colours green, yellow and red. This tricolour flag dates back to the reign of Menelik II, Emperor of Ethiopia between the 19th and 20th centuries, known to have resisted the Italian invasion during the Battle of Adoua in March 1896. Since then, the Ethiopian colours have become the symbol of pan-Africanism and African independence because Ethiopia was the only country to have retained its sovereignty in the 19th century in the face of the mass colonization of Africa by Europeans.

There were certain specifications that the design had to follow including displaying the name of the City, the date that the City of River Falls was incorporated (1885), and include no more than five colors. After narrowing down the entries to the top five, the community had their chance to vote on their favorite design. Voting took place at City Hall, the Library and on the City's website through the Survey Monkey website.
