Army (U.S.) - army and flag
Never really paid attention to the flag poles themselves. Mostly just notice the flag. Stopped at the bank yesterday and actually looked at their pole. Internal lanyard, bronze finish, weighted, stainless cable. Maybe it would be worth selling that kidney on ebay and getting a really good one once and for all. I am at the age where I want things that will outlast me....

The above is similar to ours. I went looking for the wind speed ratings and found this but it only gives un-flagged. Ours has withstood 60 knots as reported by the airport next door with a 5X8 and a 3X5 on it. 60 knots is 70 mph. Eventually one of the snaps failed which allowed the 5X8 to trail taking some of the load off. Why the halyard didn't fail I don't know as it's broken before. 3X5 nylon tattered, 5X8 is a new polyester and held up well. I wish I'd taken a photo during the storm. It should really be flying a small storm flag or nothing during those winds.

We have enough storm damage to deal with already so budget is tightening. I am sick of replacing the box store type sectional poles every couple years. Lost another yesterday afternoon.

Not a lot of oil drilling in this part of Iowa. Don't want something I need to paint. Agree the would be one tough pole though!
FIL gifted the pole when we bought the place. There was a homemade wooden pole in place that he had raised a beer box on after he mowed the yard and field while we were honeymooning. He showed up with it strapped to the side of his MATCO tool truck.

That's what we use for the township and cemetery. I never liked the telescoping poles..they freeze in the winter and i don't like that you can't fly half staff.
I haven't done it yet,but I plan on using a used high line pole, the power company will sell decent used ones reasonable.
Ours is a fiberglass pole now 30 years old. We fly a 5X8 USA and a smaller USCG flag on it. Usually we forget to bring them down in storms and I'm amazed at how far that pole will bend without breaking. Flags get tattered and halyard has broken a couple of times. We've got a large solar automatic light on the top as well. The latest one is advertised for commercial poles and lights up the surrounding yard too. Fiberglass = no rust/painting and no clanging. Base is a larger FG tube squarely set in concrete and then the pole is set in with sand poured around it I guess that allows removal. Automatic light means we just leave flag up around the clock.

I complained to Service First about my flag pole being bent in the recent storm. I bought it last July, they said it was within warranty. So they are sending me a new pole. I have to pay $50 to cover shipping but that's way better than full price. Not sure I would by this style again but I am happy with the customer service.

An observation I've made during election season when campaign signs are posted in peoples yards: If there's an American flag flying the posters always are for folks with an R after their names. Maybe it's because it's the "Live Free or Die" state or maybe it's just telling of the people. Going way back to my primary flight instruction I remember the crusty WWII instructor pilot telling me that if over NH you can always tell the wind direction for an emergency landing because of the flags.
Drill stem if you can get it. Or if you are worried about rust. Find a good fence company and get a stick of ss40 tubing for posts. Note that ss40 is not schedule 40 it is higher tensile strength. Stick should be 21 or 24 feet id do 3 inch min diameter
We fly a 6x10 flag year around. Have broken the rope 2x, once cause i bought cheap rope from Menards. Only use good rope now from local flag supply store.

2020618 — Gov. Tim Walz directed all flags at state and federal buildings in Minnesota to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Friday, June 19.
https://flagpolefarm.com/ Have had one of these for 10 years and we get good wind and its on top of a hill unsheltered. So far so good. Bought it at one of the farm shows.
That's not bad and Lamoni not far. Is that a 3" OD? I will look around for a topper and pulley parts. Maybe I can piece something together.

2” schedule 40 aluminum pipe here. 3” aluminum channels for the base in 3’ of concrete. Have watched it flex pretty good on quite a few occasions, but it’s held up for 7 or 8 years now. Think I have a 3’ x 4’ flag on it
I’m thinking about shoving a stick of 2 3/8 pipe inside of a stick of 2 7/8, and using that as a flagpole. Haven’t figured out how to anchor it though.
I love flying a flag but getting tired of replacing poles and it's getting expensive. I've found some that are considerably more expensive than what I've bought, but want to be sure they are truly better before spending that much cash.

My grandparents had that setup, as does our town office, steel not aluminum, but I would wager both are well over 75 years old and still standing today. We don’t see the wind some of you guys do, galvanized wouldn’t need painting and probably cost less than an aluminum setup.

Took a few years of being patient, but I finally found an old aluminum street light pole. Poured 3ft diameter concrete 6 ft deep. 3/4" J anchors hold the pole to the base. Decided I was gonna do it once and do it right.

Very timely post! I was just thinking about asking the same question. I had a couple of "Uncommon USA" telescopic flag poles. Both bent. I now have a "Service First" telescopic flag pole. I bought it because it's supposed to be 11 gauge vs. 16 gauge. It also bent in yesterday's storm. Also with the Service First pole there are nylon bushings held on with screws to prevent the flag from sailing up in a high wind. So it takes a little more time to drop the pole and remove the flags. I'd like to stay with the same diameter pole as I already have a sleeve concreted into the ground. I found the brand "TelePole" online that appears to be 10 gauge base, so hopefully stronger.
