The origins of the current Hungarian flag come from the historical context of Hungary before 1848: the national freedom movement that led the revolution against the Monarchy and especially the questioning of the power of the Habsburg house. This historical revolutionary movement spread throughout Europe and is known as the People's Spring. Thus the tricolour design of the Hungarian flag was inspired by the shape of the French tricolour flag to highlight the revolutionary ideas and concepts of the 1789 French Revolution. Hungary has kept its own colours: red, white and green, which are taken from the Hungarian coat of arms of the Middle Ages.
