George McManus graduated from the St. Francis School in Traverse City and then attended Michigan State University, earning Bachelor and Master of Science degrees. Later in life, McManus was awarded two Honorary degrees, one from Michigan State University and the other from Grand Valley State University. McManus worked for the Michigan State University Extension Service for 26 years, beginning as a district marketing agent and ending as county extension director. In 1990, McManus was elected to the Michigan Senate, serving for 12 years, and focused on natural resources, agriculture, and education.
“George McManus was a thoughtful public servant and leader,” said Governor Whitmer. “As a member of the Michigan Senate, he delivered for his constituents across Northern Michigan with a focus on natural resources, farming, and higher education. Senator McManus was also a loving dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him.”

The State of Michigan recognizes the duty, honor, and service of former state Senator George McManus by lowering flags to half-staff. To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The process is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex to be lowered to half-staff on Thursday, June 27 to honor and remember former state Senator George McManus. The flag lowering will coincide with the date of McManus’s funeral.
